What is In-Home Personal Care?

At Quality Health Services our team works with each family to develop a customized plan of care to address their unique needs. In addition to companion care and homemaker services, we offer a variety of personal care services to assist your loved one with their activities of daily living.

Bathing/Showering – Bathing is essential to ensure proper personal hygiene but more importantly, to the way a person feels. Our bathing services ensure that our clients receive the assistance they need to maintain proper personal cleanliness, skin integrity, stimulate circulation and reduce the potential for infection.

Walking, Transfer & Ambulation Assistance – We make sure that movement occurs on a regular basis while taking into account any physical limitation for each client. This could include going for a walk outside on a nice day or assisting with chair exercises to get the blood flowing.

Toileting Assistance – Having an experienced caregiver on hand to assist with toileting may help prevent urinary tract infections, skin breakdown and falls. Our caregivers are experienced in providing physical help and assistance, while maintaining dignity for all clients who may require assistance with toileting needs.

Oral Hygiene – Oftentimes, seniors may lack the fine motor skills necessary to ensure proper mouth care. Proper gum, tooth and denture care is vital to ensure the prevention of tooth decay, gum disease and/or periodontal infections.

Special Diet/Meal Preparation – Our caregivers will work with the family and client to develop an appetizing meal plan that meets the clients specific diet needs. This includes diabetic, gluten free, dairy free, low sodium and diet downgrades such as purees, thickeners, etc.

Eating Assistance – In some cases, clients are unable to feed themselves. Our caregivers are experienced in feeding clients and assisting with guided feeding. When appropriate, we can recommend modified feeding tools to ensure an enjoyable meal experience.

Medication Reminders – Did you know that medication mismanagement is one of the most common reasons for hospital admissions? Although our caregiver cannot administer medications, they can assist with providing medication reminders, ensuring medication compliance and assessing for any potential side-effects.

Additional personal care services we offer include – General care and supervision, personal grooming and hair care, wardrobe selection and assistance getting dressed, wheelchair, walker, cane assistance and much more!

Who Is Eligible for In-Home Personal Care Services?

More often than not, personal home care services are provided to the elderly and those with disabilities who may have just experienced injury or illness. Personal care services can help seniors maintain their independence.

This type of service is not medical and unlike home health care, does not require a prescription or certification for the provider. Personal care may be provided directly by caregivers with appropriate training in personal hygiene skills like bathing and dressing.

At Quality Health Services, our team works with each family to develop a customized plan of care to address their unique needs.

Personal Care vs Companion Care at Home

When you need home care for your aging loved one, it can be challenging deciding what type of service will work best. Companion Care services tend to focus on social needs while personal-care services emphasize medical and physical needs.

When choosing elder care, the difference between companion and personal is an important consideration in the decision process as they both provide different benefits based on a person’s individualized requirements.

Home care companions can do your laundry, make you a delicious meal that’s not just microwaved leftovers from the night before, and help out with errands like grocery shopping. They also provide emotional support to those who are grieving or struggling in their day-to-day lives due to illness or disability.

Personal care is an area of service that seeks to help people with basic needs, like personal hygiene. It can also provide physical assistance in the form of helping a person get up from their seat, grooming, eating, dressing, and toileting.

Many older adults can age in place with the help of companion caregiving. However, seniors who require advanced care or physical assistance may need personal care to live at home safely.
